Confined spaces are areas where there isn’t very much room for the person to perform their work.
OSHA requires that wherever a worker’s eyes or body could be exposed to corrosive materials that are potentially injurious, equipment or facilities must be established within the work areas and available for immediate emergency use. ANSI defines four types of flushing equipment within their standard ANSI/ISEA Z358.1
- Eyewash
- Combination eye/face wash
- Drench showers (for entire body)
- Combination shower and eyewash
Although portable eyewash bottles and stations are merely supplemental and should not be used as a replacement for the equipment listed above, these options are particularly helpful for rinsing out a worker’s eyes until the worker is able to reach an eye wash station.
5S, or Safety 5S, is a systematic and disciplined approach to maintaining a clean and orderly workplace. It is based on five Japanese words: Seiri (整理), Seiton (整頓), Seiso (清掃), Seiketsu (清潔), and Shitsuke (躾).
The 5S philosophy is simple:
- If you can’t find it, you can’t use it.
- If you can’t use it, you can’t maintain it.
- If you can’t maintain it, you’ll have to replace it.
The 5S approach applies to any workplace, office, factory, or hospital. This methodology has been proven effective in reducing waste, improving safety, and increasing productivity.
